Art & Craft

You will find that you do not need to walk more than 2 minutes from the Guest House to find plenty of interesting art and craft. Next to the guest house is a large Craft centre, and adjoining the farm is Ardmore Ceramic Art Studio. African Loom is based at Ardmore Farm

Fee Berning’s Ardmore Ceramic Art Studio
The internationally respected ceramic art studio with its unique and distinctive works of art, was set up by Fee Berning and is still owned by her. The studio was started in 1985 in a cottage on Ardmore Farm, and moved to the old stables ( only 2 minutes walk from the guest house) in 1990. The studio is open to visitors 7 days a week, and now employs about 50 Zulu artists, and you are welcome to see them at work sculpting and painting. The late Bonnie Ntshalintshali pictured above, was the most well known of the studio artists. Bonnie in 1990 won the nationally acclaimed Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Visual Art jointly with Fee Berning and has won many other
prestigious awards. They were the first ceramic artists to have won this award. Sadly, Bonnie died in 1999, aged 37 , some of her pieces can be seen in the Guest House, along with about 200 other Ardmore ceramic art pieces.

Ardmore is home to the African Loom weaving business. The cotton is hand dyed, spun, woven and then sewn, into vibrantly coloured bags, cushions, placemats etc. (www.africanloom.com). Our community craft shop stocks only local crafts and has the largest known collection of Amangwe beadwork. For more information visit www.africanloom.com
