There are so many activities in and around Ardmore that you won’t be short of things to do! Below is a selection of our top picks for what to do in the surrounding area whilst you stay with us. Many of the attractions and activities have their own website which explains further what you can do. Just follow their respective links from here!

At Ardmore

  • If you are interested in local arts and crafts, then you must visit the Ardmore ceramic art museum which is open every day.  As is our African loom weaving project, with beautiful handwoven bags and cushions for sale made from hand dyed, spun, woven and sewn cotton.

  • Visit the Amangwe crafts and beadwork community project selling locally produced crafts from 40 local beaders.

  • Pop into the Steve Bull gallery to see some great works from the infamous local artist.

  • Bass fishing and bird watching at our large farm dam, across the road roughly 400m from the guest house.

  • Enjoy the jungle gym for the kids, trampoline and table tennis.

  • Take a dip in our swimming pool with fantastic views of Champagne Castle mountain.

  • Take a 45 minute stroll up the hill above the main forest on the farm with views of the entire champagne valley.

  • Beautiful mountain biking terrain, if you bring your own bike, feel free to explore the tracks around the farm.

  • Relax and enjoy our beautiful tea garden where light lunches, tea and scones and apple pie are served.

  • Have a drink in our Honesty bar, play a game of pool, table tennis, or foosball or watch some satellite TV in the pub.

  • Take a steep 90 minute hike to the trig beacon on Ardmore Hill, 230m above the guest house, with stunning 360 views.

  • Or if you can’t keep offline, surf the internet with our high speed free wifi.

Within 15 minutes from Ardmore

    • Drakensberg Mountain Park, Monks Cowl. Entry fee of R35 plus R5 for a map showing many hikes and rock pools.  Multiple walks ranging from 1 hour round trips to 7 hours through the mountains, with multiple waterfalls and rock pools. Overnight camping in caves available. Call 036 468 1103.

    • Daily guided walk to Bushman paintings cave from Dragons Peaks at 9am – to book tel 083 753 2842

    • Falcon Ridge raptor show, bird show, 10:30am every day except Mondays and Fridays. An intriguing 90 minutes show of these beautiful, majestic birds. Educative and exciting!Weather permitting.  Call 082 774 6398

    • Church services, local and interdenominational.  Winterton – Anglican, Methodist, NGK and Lutheran.

    • Kwa Zulu weavers and candle factory.  Mohair wool rugs and a wide variety of candles.  Call 036 488 1657

    • Golf – 18 hole championship course (17th in SA) at Champagne Sports Hotel and 9 hole at Goodersons Monks Cowl golf resort.

    • Fun golf for kids at Champagne sports, Monks Cowl and Pitch and Putt at Drakensberg Sun Hotel. 9-18 hole miniature golf courses with various degrees of difficulty. From R20 pp.

    • 4 Rivers Rafting – raft trips in summer only.  Also quad bikes, zip line, paint ball, archery call 036 468 1693

    • Thokozisa Centre – restaurant, info office, deli, art gallery and many arts and crafts shops. The closest you get to a mall in this area. All outdoors.

    • Horse riding trails. At Dragon Peaks or amongst wild animals at Spioenkop Game Reserve.

    • Reptile Centre – get close and personal with a variety of reptiles. An hour and a bit of information and learning about these intimidating creatures. Touching and feeling included. Many of them have eight legs…  Call 082 995 1404

    • Drakensberg Forest Canopy Tour – professionally guided at Drakensberg Sun – R450 per person.  To book call 083 661 5691.

    • Chocolate dipping at chocolate memories in Cedarwood Centre. Free chocolate tastings at the Valleys first and only chocolate maker. Try the chocolate fondue, a must for the chocolate lover!

    • Treat yourself to one of the few spa’s and wellness saloons in the area. Several different treatments on offer.

Within 30 Minutes from Ardmore

  • Winterton Museum – unique photographic collection of Drakensberg bushman paintings.

  • Spioenkop Game Reserve – Drive or ride a bike amongst Rhino, Eland, Giraffe, Zebra and Kudu and many more, entry R25. There are many picnic spots around the beautiful picturesque dam. Don’t be surprised if you see the rhino grazing in the wild while having your lunch.

  • Winterton Village – museum, pub, chemist, banks, supermarkets, mechanics, doctors etc. It’s all there, not by Joburg size or numbers but you’ll find most things here.

  • Cathedral Peak Wine estate near Winterton. Sample some quality wines. The first and only wine estate in the region.

 

Within 1 hour of Ardmore

  • Fort Dunford, British fort in Estcourt, built in the Boer War, now a museum open Mon – Fri 9 – 4.

  • Spioenkop Battlefield (Boer war), Ladysmith Battlefields and Ladysmith Seige Museum and Winston Churchill capture sight memorial, on the road to Estcourt from Winterton.

  • Royal Natal National Park and Ampitheatre and Tugela Falls, second highest in the world at 973m, seen after a 3 hour walk.

  • Cathedral Park and Hlalanathi and Estcourt Golf Courses.

  • Didima Rock Art Museum at Cathedral Peak.

  • Injasuthi, awesome rock pools and many walks.

  • Weenen Game Reserve – many animals including Rhino and Giraffe.

Within 1.5 hours from Ardmore
